What do you do for comfort? Consider these three ideas, Comfort Items, Comfort Music, Comfort Food.
When you think of Comfort items do you think of teddy bears? Bikinis and blankets? Often we think of children when we think of comfort items. But even adults need Comfort items. We may only need them for a short time or off and on, but the stress of infertility can definitely cause you to look for ways of finding comfort.
A comfort object’s purpose is to reduce stress – especially if the situation is a traumatic or stressful. These objects are significant to the person because it offers them emotional support. It is what experts call “Essentialism” – the idea that objects are more than just physical properties.
Comfort Items can have sentimental value. The items can remind you of joy, they can provide comfort, or remind you of something; For example, something you have accomplished. Or, comfort items can remind you of what you’ve been through. Many counselors, emergency workers and even hospitals have comfort items on hand. For instance that is why hospitals have a gift shop. You are essentially trying to find the perfect thing to bring comfort. It doesn’t matter the age.
Many have commented that the hardest part of infertility is the emotional aspect. What can we do to find comfort? What can you do when you come across something that is a trigger for you? May I suggest three main ideas.
1. Small Comfort item
It can be anything. Preferably it should be small enough to be with you at all times. It could be a rock or a squishy stress ball, it could be jewelry. It just need to be something you can touch. We designed some jewelry with special symbolism designed to lift and encourage. Here are three of them.

Angels are messengers who Love, Protect and Comfort.
As you wear your necklace, remember you are loved.
You will heal and your angels are with you.

Bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world.
Each of us have trials and hard things we will have to overcome.
We can let it make us bitter and angry, or like the lotus flower we can rise up.
We can turn our trials into some of our greatest triumphs.
These are just a few of the items we have. To see the full list click here. Find yourself something small that you can carry around that reminds you to think good thoughts or reminds you how far you have come. When bad thoughts come along rub it and remember why you have it and what it means to you.
2. Comfort Music
Find music that calms you, or lifts you mood. Put together a playlist of the songs that help you to feel better. When you start having a bad day or moment. Crank it up and let the music sooth or lift you. We have so many ways to keep music with us. On your phone, In the car, through the TV… the options are endless and we find music everywhere. You can Put in your little headphones in and no one will think a thing. Some of my favorite songs are…
Think good thoughts / By Colbie Caillat
Fight Song / By Rachel Platten
Try everything / By Shakira
Handclap / By Fitz & The Tantrums
Even If / By Mercyme
Glorious / By One Voice Children’s Choir
I have these and many more in my special playlist that I listen to when I need a lift. Music is so powerful, it directly effects my mood. If you don’t have it already, get your special playlist ready. You never know when you are going to need it.
3. Comfort Food
This one is so hard because I want Sugar Cookies and Dr Pepper. Those are the foods I associate with happiness. Its no wonder I have gained so much weight since starting this infertility journey. So what do you do when the doctor takes those happy things away? Cry…literally…and throw a big fit! (That’s what I did anyway!) Then you pick yourself up and find what things you can eat that are good (Like rasberries, or guacamole if you’re me). Pinterest has so many ideas for healthy food, you can try to find something that can replace your comfort food if you’re trying to stay away from “the real thing”. I made up a chocolate chip cookie waffle recipe that I ate every day for a while. I love baked goods. It was dairy free, grain free, sugar free and believe it or not, it is good! Don’t deprive yourself of everything you love. Infertility is too hard emotionally. Find something that makes your mouth, and tummy, happy. Keep some extra on hand (you may have to hide it) so when you run into a trigger you have something ready to go.
I hope this has given you some new ideas of things to try. Take care of yourself first, self-care is so important when going through infertility. Find something that speaks to you, something that will help you feel good and implement it today.
