The Dye Test /HSG/ SHSG
By Melissa Campbell
I had the test done at my local hospital. I went to my appointment after registering. They had me undress from the waist down and I got to wear a beautiful hospital gown, some net underwear and a nice pad. They have you sit on a table under an x-ray machine…just like you would for an internal ultrasound. Next they insert a small catheter and it just felt like to the going OB. Then they push the dye through it and that is when I felt a burning sensation. It was the weirdest pain I have ever felt. It was like burning cramps. It wasn’t more than I could handle… just very uncomfortable. I have heard some say it doesn’t hurt at all. Jed, a doctor at The Circle of Life, told me he has had some patient’s pass out from the pain. I think it just depends a lot on you and your body.
The person putting the dye in told me everything he saw, which was pretty cool. He explained things like… your fallopian tubes are filling up and they look good and clear…or ….everything is looking great.
When they are done they give you a minute to recover. After the procedure is when you need the pad and undies… they say you will have bleeding similar to a mini period. I was not aware of this and was totally unprepared. I had to stop at the store on my way home. It was really nice to have my husband there to drive me home. I took it easy that night and was totally fine the next day.
I also had a dye test done two other times when my Endometriosis was removed so I know there are other ways of having this test done. The dye test also has many other names and I have a hard time keeping track of them all.
