This is Dr. Michael Grossman specializing in rejuvenation in antiaging medicine. Today were going to discuss bioidentical hormone replacement.
In 2003 a large 20,000 women nurses study on hormone replacement showed that it seemed to cause cancer and heart disease. This created quite a stir in the medical community. It took some years to clarify that the study had lumped together natural human bioidentical hormones with synthetic hormones.
Subsequent research studies performed in 2013 in Europe over 10 years and in the United States over 5 years showed that natural bioidentical hormones reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease compared to women who did nothing. It Is clear that the synthetic hormones produced by drug companies who have exclusive patents are not in your best interest to use except for very limited interventions. Certainly not for ongoing treatment relating to antiaging.
Research shows that women who use topical estrogens can use one quarter of the dose and get less problematic metabolites than those who take oral tablets. The same holds true for testosterone. But progesterone can be taken either orally or topically. Unlike estrogen dn testosterone, oral progesterone has great benefits when it is metabolized through the liver to create calmness and help with sleeping.
Women who are pregnant naturally experience high levels of progesterone and generally feel calm and relaxed and happy. Many younger women have intermittently lower progesterone levels and can experience premenstrual syndrome of irritability moodiness, which is easily corrected by natural human progesterone.
When women begin to go into menopause they will lose estrogen and progesterone and get symptoms related to hot flashes, anxiety, moodiness, or poor sleeping, decreased libido, decreasing memory, changes in the skin. These symptoms are easily reversed by taking natural human estrogen and progesterone replacement to return to more youthful levels of these hormones.
In addition to and estrogen and progesterone, women who are going into menopause lose testosterone. Lower testosterone levels will cause fatigue, decreased muscle strength & muscle stamina, decreased libido, decreased brain clarity, lesser ability to solve problems and decreased emotional enthusiasm.
It should be noted that women have only 1/12 of testosterone of a man. Nevertheless those levels are critical for women to feel youthful.
Having prescribed bioidentical hormones for the last 10 years to 1000’s of men and women, I can say with confidence that the aging process greatly can be greatly enhanced by proper dosing and careful testing for hormone levels.
Best wishes for health,
